Angus Barn Weddings | Caroline and Joe

I think that a major key to having the wedding of your dreams is being able to go with the flow. So much planning goes into this special day, it’s hard not to get bogged down in the details! But when a couple can put all the worry aside and just enjoy one another and their loved ones, the day is sure to be incredible. Caroline and Joe’s wedding was just such a day! From beginning to end, it was a joy and a privilege to be their wedding photographer!
During their emotional rehearsal dinner, I quickly realized how special their wedding would be! Joe and Caroline – and their families – were so full of happiness, and it showed in every single interaction with their guests. So many happy tears! There wasn’t a dry eye during Joe’s toast, especially when he spoke about how much he loves his mom and step-mother. It was so lovely! And when it came to the wedding itself, it was just the best time! The ceremony took place at St. Mary’s School Chapel (Caroline’s alma mater!) and their reception was at the Angus Barn in Raleigh. Caroline was absolutely stunning, truly a vision in her elegant dress and long cathedral veil. Definitely my kind of bride! During the group portraits, someone accidentally stepped on her hem, but Caroline just broke into a huge smile and said “It’s okay, no big deal!” I love that! Both she and Joe were so relaxed, yet so ecstatic to be getting married amidst their nearest and dearest. During the reception, Caroline’s parents, bridesmaids and uncle put on a special performance, wearing some hilarious get-ups. It was so much fun!
I must mention two things that I especially loved. Caroline and Joe named their rehearsal dinner signature cocktail “The Stevie”, after their Goldendoodle! Anyone who’s read my blog knows how much I love dogs, and how it warms my heart when a couple finds a way to include their pet in their wedding. Finally (and this is a moment that will always stay with me) at the very end of the day Caroline and Joe were getting into their car. I saw the bride lean in close to her father and say, “Thank you dad, it was everything I could dream of.” So, so very sweet.

I hope you enjoy these photos of a truly wonderful day, and a truly wonderful couple! Thanks Kathy Swope with Sally Oakley Events, I really loved working with you! Their day went without a hitch.

The Carolina Inn Weddings | Hollis and Rolando

The Carolina Inn Weddings

Almost exactly a year ago, I found myself working with two incredibly kind and loving people. Hollis and Rolando’s engagement session took place on the UNC campus in Chapel Hill, with beautiful light and so many sweet moments that I will never forget. It was a joy to be in their company, because the love they have for one another seems to spill over and touch everyone around them…I was lucky enough to witness again last week when they tied the knot!
Hollis and Rolando became husband and wife surrounded by the people they love most. After nine years together, their guests weren’t separated by the typical ‘his side, her side’ line. It was simply one big group of excited friends who love these two equally. What a beautiful thing to see! When a couple shares such a loving community, you can feel the deep goodwill and happiness throughout the whole day! The historic Carolina Inn in downtown Chapel Hill is such a classic and elegant venue, and it’s always a pleasure to find myself there. Because Hollis and Rolando’s relationship really began to blossom at UNC, the nearby Carolina Inn felt like the perfect location to honor their history on the campus. And once again it was wonderful to work with Kelley Ann from A Southern Soiree! If you’ve read this blog, you’ve probably seen my mentions of Kelley Ann and her talent and professionalism in the past. She’s very, very good at what she does!
One of the things that stuck with me from the first time I met Hollis and Rolando was the fact that they are clearly one another’s best friend. When I was learning about them as a couple before our engagement session, they had recently discovered that they love canoeing together. It was a small detail, but it made me understand something about them: Hollis and Rolando will keep finding more to love about the adventure of life as they go through it together, as husband and wife. And what better foundation for a beautiful marriage than that? I wish these two amazing people the best, and hope you enjoy this sneak peek of their day!

Chevy Chase Club Wedding | Stephanie and Tim

Chevy Chase Club Wedding I’m so excited to get to write about a wedding that I’ve been waiting for since the spring! In April, I had the pleasure of working with Stephanie and Tim on their engagement session, and I’ve been looking forward to being around their chemistry and charisma ever since! These two are high school sweethearts who stayed close over the years, and rekindled their romance in 2014. They absolutely radiate positivity and happiness, making each other laugh and smile constantly. So I knew their wedding would be a wonderful event — and it was!
The ceremony and reception both took place at the Chevy Chase Club in Maryland, a truly beautiful and historic venue. With is rolling lawns and stunning classic architecture, the Chevy Chase felt like the perfect place for Stephanie and Tim’s celebration — and what an elegant backdrop it made for their photos! The weather was so gorgeous (surprisingly warm for late September) and the day went off without a hitch. Stephanie and Tim had mentioned beforehand that getting to enjoy their guests was really important to them, so it was especially helpful that they were ahead of schedule. We accomplished most of the group photos before the ceremony! Afterwards, the newlyweds were able to be with their guests for the full cocktail hour. Yay!!!
Besides being ahead of schedule, I know that the loving, happy tone of the day was truly set by the bride and groom themselves. As I watched Stephanie and Tim together, I could see the type of bond that only years together can form. Theirs is a deep love between two souls, lifted and supported by the strong connection between their families and their kindhearted friends. Stephanie is clearly the world to Tim…and Tim is the world to Stephanie. The joy of the celebration just kept on going, and I was even able to photograph some of Tim’s famous dance moves amidst their 200 very excited guests! What a day this was! I wish them all the happiness in the world, and I hope you enjoy this sneak peek of their wedding!

Oh, and be sure to check out Stephanie’s delightful blog The Chaotic Kitchenette!

VA Beach Wedding Photographers | Meera and Steven

As a photographer, one of the pleasures of my job is getting to meet amazing new people. It’s so much fun to get to know a little about each couple, their history and their lives’ work as individuals…as well as their life together. Meera and Steven are exceptional people on their own, and truly a loving and special couple! I had a wonderful time with them during our recent engagement session in Virginia Beach.
These two met in law school, and hit it off quickly at a weekly bar review social gathering. They’ve been together ever since! Three years on, Steven now works for the coast guard. This past Christmas he was supposed to be at sea, but surprised Meera by showing up in Washington state where she was spending time with her family. But Steven’s arrival wasn’t the only surprise in store! He asked Meera to be his wife on Christmas morning! Now that’s a Christmas gift!! It’s clear that these two share something truly special not only with each other, but with each other’s families. I love it when a proposal happens in the midst of family. Such a beautiful thing!
Because of Steven’s work, it felt especially fitting that our session was near the water. Meera was absolutely stunning, with her big smile and her long dark hair. She is so beautiful, I had to ask her family’s background. Her father is from India! As a couple, Meera and Steven are very nice and laid-back. Before our session ended, the three of us had a lovely chat about being in the military. My husband is in the military, so I always appreciate spending time with a couple that shares that connection. Meera and Steven: I wish you all the best and thank you for the good company and conversation!

VA Mountain Wedding | Annie and Mat

Back in June I first blogged about getting to meet Annie and Mat when I worked on their engagement session. I felt truly honored to be a part of that day, Mat had just completed a 17-hour drive down from Canada to be with Annie, whose family hosted the shoot on their gorgeous property in Afton. We all spent the morning together, with Lily (Annie and Mat’s pup) joining in for several photos before scampering off to play in the woods. And at the very end of the session, Annie’s folks stepped into frame for a few pictures too. Watching this loving family from behind my lens was a special gift, so it was a treat to find myself in Afton again recently…this time witnessing Annie and Mat join their lives as husband and wife.
Those who have read my blog in the past know how much I love emotional weddings…and this was one for the books! There was so much love and laughter during the ceremony, and many, many happy tears. Witnessing moments like these is why I do what I do. And I got to spend time with pup Lily again! She was a big part of the day, hanging out with her mom as she got ready for the ceremony. And during the reception, Lily had a wag and a smile for everyone as she basked in all the love and attention! Very sweet. Of course we included her in the portraits too. 🙂
Milestones in our lives come and go; we gather the ones we love around us, and we mark time with these big turning points, these ceremonies and rituals. Even amidst the joy of the most loving celebration, there is often a longing for the ones we’ve lost along the way. Annie, I know how much you wanted your mom to be with you on this day. And I also know that wherever she is now, she is immensely proud of her strong, beautiful (inside and out) and kind daughter. You and Mat have such a beautiful future ahead of you. I feel grateful to know you, and I wish you the very best.

I hope you enjoy this selection of photos from Annie and Mat’s day the way I did capturing them! Thanks Sarah Nyanjom with Wedding Realized for being so wonderful to work with. Also, thanks Sarah Der for capturing their wedding with me!
